2015JAUIP

On August 28, 2015, the students of the 2015 Summer English Seminar of Intellectual Property (Student Course and Practitioner Course) hosted by the Japan Association of Universities for Intellectual Property Education and Research (JAUIP) (roughly 40 people including employees of the Patent Offices, patent attorneys and other interested professionals, and students from Asian and African countries) visited the IP High Court.

They received from Chief Judge Ryuichi Shitara explanations on outline of intellectual property litigation in Japan, the defense of invalidity in connection with patents, and the judicial settlement procedure for patent litigation, as well as explanations on the globalization of intellectual property dispute, and other matters. They also received from the judge of the IP High Court explanations on decisions on similarity in trademark, and other matters. In response to such explanations, there was an active question and answer session that covered the method for calculation of the amount of damages in intellectual property litigation, the relationship between proceedings of the Japan Patent Office and litigation, Judicial Research Official system in intellectual property litigation, and whether litigation concerning trademarks for sounds and smells existed or not. The enthusiasm of the students was evident in the fact that they continued to ask questions until they were satisfied.
