Visit to U.S. Law Firms

On May 11, 2016, Chief Judge Ryuichi Shitara of the IP High Court visited two law firms: Foley & Lardner LLP and Finnegan LLP.

At Foley & Lardner LLP, Chief Judge Shitara had discussions and exchanged opinions with attorneys Andrew E. Rawlins, Matthew A. Ambros, Pavan K. Agarwal, George E. Quillin, and Robert H. Huey, on the actual status of jury-awarded damage amount calculation, a comparison of the calculation aforementioned with judge-awarded damage amount calculation, criteria of judgment for apportionment of royalties based on the value of patent rights for value of products as a whole, and others.

At Finnegan LLP, Chief Judge Shitara had discussions and exchanged opinions with attorneys Elizabeth D. Ferrill, York M. Faulkner, and Chiaki Fujiwara, on the characteristics of jury-based trials and measures against those trials, criteria of judgment for calculation of royalties not for products as a whole, but for the smallest salable unit, the disputed issues of the Apple v. Samsung case accepted by Supreme Court of the United States, forecasts for patent-related legislation, and others.
