Visit by Students of the University of Washington, U.S.A
On October 23, 2018, students and staff from “CASRIP”(Center for Advanced Study and Research on Innovation Policy), a research institute annexed to the University of Washington, visited the IP High Court. They observed oral arguments in a courtroom, toured a round table courtroom and the office of judicial research officials of the IP High Court, and then participated in a discussion meeting with judges of the IP High Court.
Judge Aya Takahashi and Judge Toshihiko Terada of the Third Division of the IP High Court attended the discussion meeting and explained about topics such as the outline and history of the IP High Court, the IP-related litigation system in Japan and an overview of proceedings conducted by the IP High Court. The students actively inquired about topics such as the use of technological knowledge in IP related litigation, and the relationship between the decision of the IP High Court and that of the Japan Patent Office regarding the validity of patents. An active question and answer session was held among the two judges and the students.
