From October 14 to 16, 2019, Chief Judge Makiko Takabe of the IP High Court attended the Global Series 2019, held at the Alohilani Resort in Hawaii, the United States.
This conference, which is organized by the Federal Circuit Bar Association (FCBA) and the Europe Patent Lawyers Association (EPLAW), has been held every year since 2010.
This year's conference, held under the theme of "Innovation and IP Leadership: Commerce, Trade, Governance, and Adjudication," was attended by many participants, ranging from judges from the United States (eight judges, among whom six were of the CAFC), Germany, the Netherlands, and South Korea, to IP lawyers and IP personnel of international companies from around the world, and as many as 20 sessions were conducted. At one of these sessions, "KEYNOTE: Intellectual Property: Judicial System Insights," Chief Judge Takabe delivered a keynote speech titled "Further Clarifications on Damage Calculations in Japan" in which she talked about the latest Grand Panel judgment and legal amendments concerning damage caused by patent infringement. Subsequently, she discussed how an en banc hearing should be conducted and various other topics with Chief Judge Sharon Prost of the US Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit (CAFC).
