Judge of IP High Court Participate in 15th Annual Conference on International Intellectual Property Law & Policy

On April 12-13, 2007, the 15th Annual Conference on International Intellectual Property Law & Policy was held at Fordham University School of Law, New York in the United States. Judge Koichi Tanaka from the IP High Court participated in the conference.

The conference is hosted annually by Fordham University School of Law (organized by Prof. Hugh C. Hansen).This year, about 350 persons concerned with IP law including judges, attorneys, government officials, and scholars from Europe, the United States, Asia, and various other regions in the world participated in the conference. On April 11, Judge Tanaka also participated in the 4th Annual Asian IP Law & Policy Day, Recent Developments in Intellectual Property Law & Policy in Asia, which was jointly held by the IP Academy (Singapore) and Fordham University School of Law.

The conference consists of a plenary session where all participants gather in an auditorium, and concurrent sessions that are simultaneously held at different venues by subject.

At the plenary session, discussions were held under the theme of “The Next Ten Years in Intellectual Property Law: What Should Happen? What Will Happen?” At concurrent sessions, participants discussed recent topics and problems relating to judicial practices and legislative developments regarding patent rights, copyrights and trademark rights.

Judge Tanaka participated in the concurrent session entitled “Japanese IP Developments,” and made a speech under the title “The Intensified Case Management in Specialized Court,” explaining the recent trends in the number of cases and the trial period since the introduction of intensified case management. He also participated, as a panelist, in the concurrent session entitled “Patent Litigation: A View from the Trenches,” and exchanged opinions with Judge Klaus Grabinski of the District Court of Dusseldorf and other panelists on the stage.
