Visit by the American Intellectual Property Law Association (AIPLA) Delegation to the IP High Court
On April 11, 2013, a 25 member AIPLA delegation visited the IP High Court and met and exchanged views with its judges and the judges from the Intellectual Property Divisions of the Tokyo District Court. AIPLA is an association founded in 1897 consisting of about 16,000 member lawyers primarily specialized in intellectual property.
The meeting opened with addresses by former AIPLA President Mr. David Hill and Mr. Toshiaki Iimura, Chief Judge of the IP High Court. Two AIPLA representatives then gave presentations on recent hot topics in the United States: Mr. Joseph Calvaruso under the title of “Divided/Joint Infringement: The Federal Circuit’s En Banc Akamai/McKesson Decisions” and Ms. Mercedes Meyer under the title of “Politics, Health Care, Subject Matter Eligibility, & Patent Preemption”. IP High Court Judges also gave presentations: Chief Judge Iimura under the title of “Patent Infringement by Plural Entities in Japan” and Judge Shinji Oda under the title of “Recent Japanese Cases Regarding FRAND License Declaration.” The US delegation and the Japanese judges subsequently engaged in a lively Q&A session.
