Participation by IP High Court Judge in an International Conference Held at the University of Washington
IP High Court Chief Judge Toshiaki Iimura participated in the 2013 High Technology Protection Summit held in Seattle, Washington, USA, on July 26 and 27, 2013. This international conference was hosted by the Center for Advanced Study and Research on Intellectual Property (CASRIP), a research institute affiliated with the University of Washington.
Chief Judge Iimura took part in the panel discussion entitled "Patent Enforcement and Appropriate Remedy," which formed part of the session entitled "Technology Standard Patents and Competition Law Issues." Prof. Dr. Jorechim Bornkamm from the Federal Court of Justice of Germany and Judge James Robert from the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Washington also participated in this discussion. Judge Iimura spoke about the status of the debate and court rulings in Japan regarding patents for technical standards and engaged in a debate with the other panelists.
