On May 22, 2026, we received a visit from the Hon. Florence Butin, President of the First Instance of the Unified Patent Court and the Hon. Renée Marie Bumb, Chief Judge of the US District Court for the District of New Jersey, together with Prof. Matthias Leistner of the Faculty of Law, Ludwig Maximilian University, Munich, Prof. Polk Wagner of the University of Pennsylvania Carey Law School, and Prof. Christoph Rademacher of Waseda University.
President Butin and other visitors exchanged opinions with judges of the Intellectual Property High Court about the characteristics of patent litigation proceedings and methods for judges to acquire expert knowledge, and then toured courtrooms, equipment, etc. in the Business Court (the common name for the court building in Nakameguro where specialized divisions of the Intellectual Property High Court and the Tokyo District Court are located).
