Participation in the International IP Court Conference Hosted by the Patent Court of Korea(November 11 and 12)
On November 11 and 12, 2020, Presiding Judge TSURUOKA Toshihiko and Judge KUMAGAI Daisuke of the IP High Court participated in the International IP Court Conference (IIPCC) hosted by the Patent Court of Korea.
At the IIPCC, which has been held in autumn annually since 2015, judges, lawyers, scholars, and other IP experts from the UK, Europe, the U.S., and Asia discuss practical issues concerning judgments and procedures of international IP litigation.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the IIPCC 2020 was held in a hybrid format; participants outside Korea attended the panel discussions and the mock arbitration trial conducted in Seoul via the internet or by means of video recordings.
Judge Tsuruoka participated in Session 3 "Major Issues in Design Litigation" as a panelist, and introduced the actual situation of design rights protection and design right infringement litigation in Japan.
Judge Kumagai participated in Session 4 "Cross-border Issue in IP infringement" and Session 5 "Discussion on Standard Essential Patents (SEP) and FRAND Commitment" as a panelist and presented the actual situation in Japan regarding the topics of each session. Judge Kumagai also served as an arbitrator in the mock arbitration trials on standard essential patent (SEP) and design right infringement, and exchanged opinions with judges of other countries.
