- On April 19, 2023, a delegation from the American Intellectual Property Law Association (AIPLA) visited the IP High Court, and held a discussion session with the judges of the IP High Court and the Intellectual Property Divisions of the Tokyo District Court after touring the court building. Established in 1897, AIPLA is an organization consisting of legal professionals who mainly practice IP law. This was the 33rd session between Japanese courts and AIPLA and the first one since the IP High Court and the Intellectual Property Divisions of the Tokyo District Court moved to the Business Court in Nakameguro.
The session began with opening remarks by Chief Judge OTAKA Ichiro of the IP High Court and Mr. Patrick J. Coyne, the then President of AIPLA. Then, Judge KATSUMATA Kumiko of the IP High Court delivered presentations titled “Brief Explanation of Business Court” and “Latest Judgment of the Grand Panel of the Intellectual Property High Court (IPHC).”
Mr. Coyne from AIPLA gave a presentation titled “Recent Developments in US Intellectual Property Law,” explaining the recent important developments in the United States, including court decisions and legislative trends on various issues involved in intellectual property law.
Following these presentations, the Japanese judges and AIPLA delegates actively asked and answered questions and exchanged opinions with each other.
At the end of the session, Chief Judge OTAKA and Mr. Coyne delivered closing remarks and confirmed that the Japanese courts and AIPLA will deepen mutual interaction through the next and subsequent sessions.
