On April 5th, The Rt. Hon. Lord Carnwath of Notting Hill, former Justice of the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom, visited the Supreme Court of Japan to pay a courtesy call on Chief Justice TOKURA Saburo and Justice NAGAMINE Yasumasa, and also held discussion with Justice UGA Katsuya.

During the courtesy call, Lord Carnwath expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to visit the Supreme Court of Japan. Chief Justice TOKURA responded that the friendly relationship between the Japanese court and the UK’s court should be further deepened through such opportunities, touching upon the visit of The Rt. Hon. Lord Reed of Allermuir, President of the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom, to Japan last year.

Chief Justice TOKURA, Justice NAGAMINE, and Lord Carnwath exchanged views on issues of their interest including the judicial system of both countries, and the meeting finished in warm atmosphere.

During the discussion with Justice UGA, there was a lively exchange of views on issues including the case filed in the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom of which Lord Carnwath was in charge and the administrative dispute resolution system in Japan and the United Kingdom.
