 As the sole Supreme Court-affiliated library, the Supreme Court Library provides other courts nationwide with the necessary references for handling court proceedings, and is the law library that serves as the branch library for the judicial section of the National Diet Library.
 Its collection, which is open-access, comprises about 270,000 books in total, about 170,000 of which are Japanese and about 100,000 of which are foreign, and although the collection mainly consists of legal texts that are necessary for judicial administration, such as statute books, law reports, commentaries, collections of papers, and journals, it also includes texts in various other scientific fields related to judicial affairs.
